Mycology and Mushrooms During the past several decades, many major advancements in medical science have come from mycology, or the study of molds, yeast, fungi, and mushrooms. The first antibiotics were developed from fungi, including penicillin, tetracycline, and auereomycin. These were hailed as wonder drugs, proving very effective against infections and communicable diseases. Mushrooms are valuable as a health food, providing vegetable proteins, iron, zinc, fiber, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Mushrooms also have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, with proven effects on promoting good health and vitality and increasing the body's immune systems. Recent studies have shown mushrooms to be probiotic-meaning they help the body strengthen itself and fight off illness, thereby maintaining physiological homeostasis. The compounds contained in mushrooms have been classified as Host Defense Potentiators (HDP) which have immune system enhancement properties. This is the main reason they are used in China and Japan as adjuncts to cancer treatment therapies. Polysaccharides, Beta-1,3/1-6 Glucan and Macrophage Cells Your immune system basically consists of several lines of defense that exist exclusively to seek out and destroy foreign bacteria and viruses in your system which may potentially cause anything from the common cold to cancer. When your immune system is weak or declines with age, you become more susceptible to illness. Rather than use drug therapy exclusively to fight these viruses, medical science is concentrating on ways to strengthen the body's natural defense systems. Mushrooms contain polysaccharides, which are chains of sugar molecules formed together to make larger sugars, and have been shown to activate the immune system. Beta 1,3/1-6 Glucan is a naturally derived polysaccharide which has been intensively studied since the 1950s for its anti-tumor and immuno-stimulating properties. In order to understand the benefit of the Beta 1,3/1-6 Glucan molecule, it is important to understand the macrophage cell and its mechanism of action. The macrophage cell is a single-cell organism designed to identify and destroy any abnormal cells it finds in the human body. These cells do an excellent job of ridding the body of these harmful cells, but only when they are motivated to do so. This is where the polysaccharide Beta 1,3/1-6 Glucan becomes important. Beta Glucan molecules stimulate these macrophage cells into action. This is why Beta Glucan has become so important to the immune system. They serve as a "wake-up" call to the fundamental macrophage immune force. Beta Glucan as a Carcinostatic Mushroom polysaccharides are considered to be biological response modifiers (BRM) or immunopotentiators because of the action mechanism on the body's immune system. The clinical usefulness of the polysaccharides has been demonstrated with patients having various forms of cancer. Beta Glucan has been shown to be an effective carcinostatic, or cancer fighter, and has been used alone or in combination with chemotherapy and other cancer therapies. It has been shown that the use of Beta Glucan in these cases has resulted in improved immunological parameters in tested patients and considerably prolonged survival periods. Here is what the scientific community is saying about Beta Glucan: "Glucan (Beta-1.3) has been shown to enhance macrophage function dramatically, and to increase nonspecific host resistance to a variety of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections." --Dept. of Experimental Hematology and Radiation Sciences, Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute. "Beta-1,3 Glucan, is a potent macrophage stimulant and is beneficial in the therapy of experimental bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases." --Tulane University School of Medicine "A cascade of interactions and reactions initiated by macrophage regulatory factors can be envisioned to occur " --Harvard Medical School Who
needs Beta Glucan? People with impaired immune systems from any of the
following causes:
Agaricus Blazei Murill (ABM) Agaricus Blazei Murill is a rare mushroom that originates from Piedade, which is located in the suburbs of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Some 30 years ago, a US researcher noted that the rate of occurrence of adult diseases in the Piedade region was extremely low, and found that it was because of the Agaricus, a local mushroom called "Cogmelo de Deus" or "Mushroom of God", that was a part of the regular diet of the inhabitants of this area. A study of the mushroom proved it had amazing immune-enhancing effects on the body. The Agaricus contains the polysaccharide Beta Glucan. Although other mushrooms contain Beta Glucan, the Agaricus mushroom has the highest concentration levels of this critical molecule. Researchers have isolated a number of immune system-enhancing and anti-cancer, anti-tumor fractions from Agaricus mushrooms, and have shown the Agaricus to be the most effective in a study comparing its effects with Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi, Coriolus, Phellinus and other fungi. Fractions identified with immunity effects include: Beta 1,3/1-6 Glucan, polysaccharide-protein complex (ATOM) and RNA-Protein complexes. As discussed above, the immunity enhancing effects are due to the stimulation of the body's macrophage cells. The Agaricus also stimulates the production of interferon and interleukin (proteins produced by the body in response to viruses), and NK (Natural Killer) cells. NK cells are called white cells and their function is to kill tumor cells. The NK cells come from the bone marrow and enter the blood circulatory systems. They are the first line of defense against cancer. In 1995, Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum Ph.D., from King Drew Medical Center of UCLA, found that the Agaricus mushroom increases the total number of all immune cells within the body. In addition, he discovered that the Agaricus not only increased the number of NK cells, but also made each individual NK cell more powerful. He presented his findings to the Ninth World Immunology Congress held in San Francisco: "In the present study, we evaluate the ability of Agaricus to stimulate in vivo Natural Killer (NK) cell activity in mice. The results demonstrated that the induction of NK activity was very significant (38-49 fold increase over control)." Clinical Results Research performed at universities in Japan, Hong Kong and a few in the United States have suggested that the polysaccharides derived from Agaricus Blazei Murill have a positive effect in stimulating lymphocyte T-cell and helper T-cell production in laboratory mice and guinea pig experiments. The table below shows the results of test on the anti-cancer properties of the Agaricus Blazei Murill conducted on guinea pigs at the Medical Department of Tokyo University, the National Cancer Center Laboratory and Tokyo College of Pharmacy.
Injecting Sarcoma 180-a strong cancer-causing agent-into the femur of these guinea pigs normally causes cancer to spread to the entire body over four to five weeks, resulting in the death of almost all these animals. Agaricus Blazei Murill was found to be effective in 90% of all tested animals in eliminating the cancerous tumors. The anti-cancer effect rate represents the percentage of guinea pigs which fully recovered from the cancer induced by an initial vaccination of Sarcoma 180 and in whom a second vaccination of Sarcoma 180 failed because the cancer cells could not be successfully embedded. ABM so thoroughly activates the immune system that even when a virus or other external factor enters the tissue, macrophage and interferon production within the tissue is vitalized to prevent the multiplication, metastasis, and reoccurrence of cancer cells. There are many testimonials from human patients who have taken Agaricus Blazei Murrill. Some of the conditions that have been successfully treated include:
